We want to provide some perspective on what is happening, what it may mean for Viking River Cruise guests, and why there is no reason to panic or make decisions based solely on headlines.

Central and Eastern Europe have experienced periods of extreme summer heat and limited rainfall, resulting in unusually low water levels along portions of the Danube.

The Danube is enormous, stretching nearly 1,800 miles through 10 countries. Conditions are not identical across the entire river.

Certain sections can experience navigational restrictions while other sections continue operating normally.

This distinction matters.

A headline saying “the Danube is low” does not automatically mean that every Danube sailing has stopped or that an entire vacation is disrupted.

Yes.

Viking continues to operate river cruises throughout Europe while actively monitoring river conditions.

Depending on the specific sailing, date and section of river involved, an itinerary may operate normally or Viking may make operational adjustments when necessary.

Those adjustments can include:

• Changes to docking locations
• Modified sailing times
• Adjusted excursion schedules
• Motorcoach transportation around a temporarily unnavigable section
• In some circumstances, transferring guests to another Viking ship farther along the itinerary

These decisions are made based on the actual conditions affecting each individual sailing.

One of Viking's greatest advantages is the sheer scale of its European river operation.

Viking operates an extensive fleet of purpose-built river vessels throughout Europe, including its well-known Viking Longships®.

That gives Viking operational flexibility that a company with only one or two ships on a particular river simply cannot have.

When conditions prevent a ship from safely navigating a specific section, Viking may have the ability to reposition guests and continue the journey aboard another Viking vessel.

Because many Viking Longships are sister ships with extremely similar layouts, accommodations and onboard experiences, Viking can sometimes perform what is commonly called a ship swap.

Instead of abandoning an entire vacation because one section of river becomes temporarily impassable, Viking can work to keep the itinerary moving.

It may not be completely invisible to the traveler, but it is a significant logistical capability.

Imagine two Viking ships operating the same general itinerary in opposite directions.

If a shallow portion of the river prevents either ship from passing through safely, Viking may bring each vessel as close to that area as conditions allow.

Guests can then be transported around the affected section and board the corresponding Viking ship on the opposite side.

Your vacation continues from there.

Because Viking's Longships share a highly standardized design and onboard experience, the transition can be considerably more seamless than it sounds.

The goal is simple:

Protect the overall journey rather than allow one section of river to determine the entire vacation.

Yes, and we want to be transparent about that.

When water levels prevent safe navigation, there may be circumstances in which guests travel by motorcoach to reach an excursion, another city, another docking location or another Viking ship.

That is certainly different from sailing every mile of the itinerary.

However, it is also important to understand the purpose of a European river cruise.

You are traveling to experience Vienna, Budapest, Passau, Regensburg, Bratislava, the Wachau 

Valley and the extraordinary destinations surrounding the river.

Viking's priority is to continue delivering those experiences whenever conditions allow, even when Mother Nature requires some logistical creativity.

The current issue is low water and reduced navigable depth in certain sections, not the disappearance of the Danube River.

Water levels on European rivers naturally fluctuate throughout the year based on rainfall, snowmelt, temperature and upstream conditions.

The Danube Commission and national waterway authorities continuously monitor river levels and maintain navigable channels. Low-water navigation has become an increasingly important issue for commercial and passenger vessels, and European authorities continue working on fairway maintenance, dredging, surveying and other measures designed to support safe navigation.

No — and this is one of the most important points for travelers.

River levels can change considerably with rainfall and weather patterns.

Conditions affecting a sailing today do not automatically predict the conditions for a sailing several weeks or months from now.

For travelers with future Viking reservations, we generally do not recommend making major decisions based on a snapshot of today's river level.

We monitor the situation much closer to departure, when the information becomes relevant to your actual voyage.

River cruising has always required adaptability.

Rivers are living transportation systems. Water can be unusually high one season and unusually low another.

This is not Viking's first experience managing changing river conditions.

Depending upon the conditions during your particular voyage, you could experience no meaningful changes at all, minor itinerary adjustments, different docking arrangements or more significant transportation modifications.

Every sailing is different.

If you are booked on an upcoming Viking River Cruise, you do not need to spend every morning checking river gauges or worrying about every headline coming out of Europe.

These updates have generated increased media attention, and we want to provide you with a clear, factual, and grounded overview of what is changing and, just as importantly, what is not.

As of April 2026, the European Union has officially activated the Entry/Exit System (EES) across the Schengen Area. This is a digital border management system designed to modernize how travelers enter and exit Europe.

• Passport stamps are being replaced with biometric registration
• Travelers will have:
  • A facial scan
  • Fingerprint capture upon first entry
• Your travel days in the Schengen Zone are automatically tracked (90 days within 180) 

• Your first arrival into Europe may take slightly longer
• After your initial registration, future entries become quicker and more streamlined
• The system reduces manual processing and improves border efficiency over time

This is not a new restriction. It is a technology upgrade to an already existing process.

Following EES, the EU will introduce ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorization System), expected to launch later in 2026.

• Will apply to U.S. travelers and other visa-exempt countries

At this time, no action is needed, and travel plans remain unaffected.

Domestically, the United States has completed its own transition.

• In effect since May 2025
• Required for all domestic flights
• Acceptable alternatives include a valid passport

This change has now been fully absorbed into normal travel flow.
